How the Resilient Power Pool cluster works

The first five Cumbrian Resilient Community Projects (RCPs), Appleby, Penrith, Warcop, Brough, and Kirkby Stephen, form a shared Resilient Power Pool (RPP) Cluster built from local Community Energy Services (CES) that can work independently and together when needed.

  • Each CES connects into a shared, interoperable energy network using standardised infrastructure.
  • Distributed generation, battery storage, bidirectional EV integration, and local energy trading allow energy to move where it is needed most.
  • The cluster supports dynamic energy balancing and peer-to-peer exchange of surplus power across participating communities.
  • During emergencies or outages, communities can coordinate response through DESO activation and provide mutual support.
  • The overall result is stronger energy security, lower costs, better asset utilisation, and long term community energy sovereignty across the region.
